👉Check Out the Treatment for Childhood Apraxia of Speech👈

Dear Parent,

I am a researcher in the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at New York University. I am currently seeking participants for a treatment study investigating how intensive this treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech can affect how children move their lips and jaw before and after 8 weeks of treatment.

What we are looking for:
• Children between the ages of 2 and 5
• No history of major cognitive difficulties or hearing loss
• No history of allergy to or irritation from bandage adhesive

What your child will do:
• Complete an evaluation of speech, language, nonverbal cognition, and oral motor skills.
• Complete a hearing screening.
• Produce words while wearing a headset microphone and reflective markers (placed on the jaw, lips, forehead, and nose) to record speech and facial movement.
• Participate in 8 weeks of treatment with a clinician who specializes in childhood apraxia of speech
• Return one-week and six-weeks post-treatment for data collection.
• During parts of this study, your child will be audio and video recorded.

What you will do:
• Fill out a questionnaire about your child’s developmental, medical and educational histories.

How long it will take:
• Total participation will be approximately 32 hours, including all pre-testing, treatment sessions, and post-testing.
• Treatment will be provided four times weekly for 45-minute sessions.
Location:
• The initial contact with your child, including aspects of speech, language, and motor speech testing, can be conducted using Zoom. Other testing and all treatment sessions and follow-up sessions will take place in the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at NYU (665 Broadway, 9th floor and 726 Broadway, 5th floor).

Risks:
• Participation in this study involves no more than minimal risk to your child.
• There is a very slight risk that your child could swallow one of the reflective markers (1.5-3mm in diameter) placed on their face and mouth. Your child will be continuously monitored during testing to ensure that markers remain on the face and mouth.

There is also a slight risk that your child may be allergic to or develop skin irritation from the adhesive we use for the markers. If your child has a history of allergy to or irritation from bandage adhesive, they should not participate in this study.

What your child will receive:
• Free speech and language assessment;
• Free treatment over 8 weeks;
• $20 cover the cost of public transportation to and from NYU for each treatment session for your child and an adult.

You will be asked to sign a written permission form that will explain the study and your child’s rights in more detail; if you are interested in enrolling your child or have any additional questions, please contact me at [email protected]. Thank you for your time!

Sincerely,
