In this math tutoring course, students will explore the concept of fractions by exploring visual fraction models. Throughout this course, students will understand the concept of numerators and denominators, how fractions fit into a number line, comparing fractional amounts, and adding or subtracting with like and unlike denominators.
This course is customizable for students with varying degrees of comfort and familiarity with fractions and takes on a constructivist approach to math instruction. This means that our math fractions tutor is building on what students already know, and the child will construct their own knowledge through exploration and trial and error, ensuring long-lasting learning. For students in grades 5-6, this course can be extended to address decimals and percentages.

How to Make Learning Fractions Easy
It’s not uncommon for students who are typically good at math to suddenly struggle once they encounter fractions. This is often because students can’t make a connection between fractions and real-world learning.
With these simple tips, you can help your child or student learn fractions easier.
Most children learn best when they’re using their hands. Using manipulatives allows students to have a visual and tactile representation of the fraction problems they are trying to solve. This helps them understand fractions concepts better.
Teach with Pictures
Just like how kinesthetic learners understand lessons better when using their hands, visual learners benefit from seeing concepts drawn out before them. Drawing and cutting shapes and using printable worksheets help young students visualize fractions.
Make it Fun
There’s no better way to keep students engaged than to make lessons fun and exciting with games. Making fractions games is quick and easy, and you can use items that you already have. An example would be using dominoes to teach students about what a numerator and denominator is.
OUR COACH TATIANA
Tatiana is a certified teacher with over 7 years of experience in NYC schools. She graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame and is a Teach for America alumna. During her time as a TFA corps member, she completed a Masters in Teaching from the Relay Graduate School of Education and holds a Professional Certificate in Childhood Education (grades 1-6).
Tatiana specializes in inquiry-based learning and constructivist teaching methods. She implements Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Tactile (VAKT) strategies in her lesson plans. She uses a Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) approach to teaching math that is rigorous and individualized to each student. Tatiana will incorporate various multi-sensory techniques, including the use of manipulatives, to develop conceptual understanding. She firmly believes that successful math instruction happens when teachers build on students’ innate number sense and curiosity, making math fun and accessible to all learners.
She currently works as an educational consultant for an ed-tech company specializing in virtual assessment and instruction. She coaches teachers and leaders on using data to drive instruction and best practices for effective differentiation, both in school and remotely. Prior to this, she taught 3rd-5th grade on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, then in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.
Tatiana has extensive experience with test prep material and is deeply familiar with New York State Standards, having had 100% of her students pass the NY State Math Test for four consecutive years, exceeding the statewide average by over 60%.
