Long Island Letters consists of two occupational therapists: Lynn-Marie Herlihy works in Brooklyn and Dr. Neeha Patel works in Manhattan (please scroll down to read more about her work).

LYNN-MARIE HERLIHY

Lynn received her master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Tuft’s University in Boston. Since graduating in 1998, she has worked with children in a variety of settings, including Early Intervention, public schools, private schools, and private practice. She has extensive experience helping children with fine motor delays (strength, dexterity, bilateral integration), pre-writing and handwriting skills, sensory processing disorders, and visual-motor and visual-perceptual problems. With over 12 years of experience, Lynn has worked with children from birth to 12 years old, with mild to severe delays. She has pursued her personal interest in yoga by training with both Yoga Kids and Radiant Child Yoga programs. Lynn is also trained in the Handwriting without Tears Program and Therapeutic Listening Program. Her approach is uniquely tailored to each child, drawing from sensory integration theory, a neurodevelopmental approach, and play-based activities in order to engage and motivate the child. Lynn offers individual Occupational Therapy assessment and direct services either in your home or a private therapy room in Park Slope. OT can address a wide range of needs including gross motor/coordination issues, fine motor development, handwriting, self-care skills, tactile defensiveness, and attention issues as related to Sensory Integration Dysfunction. Sensory integration techniques (including suspended equipment) and fine motor activities are used, depending on the needs of the child. Lynn uses a play-based approach to make therapy fun and motivating for the child. Consultation with parents and classroom teachers is also available.

In addition to home visits, Lynn works in a pediatric sensory gym called Run, Jump, Roll. It is fully equipped with a wide variety of sensory integration tools and equipment, in order to help children improve their sensory processing, balance and coordination, and other motor delays. There are also two private treatment rooms for working on fine motor skills, handwriting, visual perception, and sustained attention to the task. The gym has a waiting area where parents can watch the child’s session and learn valuable techniques for use at home and in school.

NEEHA PATEL

Dr. Neeha received her bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Boston University, and master’s degree and clinical doctorate degree in Occupational Therapy from University of Southern California. Since completing her education, she has worked with children and their families in a variety of settings, including home and center based early intervention, public schools, private schools, early childhood mental health, outpatient hospital based programs, sensory outpatient clinics, interdisciplinary assessment clinics, community based pediatric programs, and private practice. She has extensive experience helping children with sensory processing delays, fine and visual motor delays, social skills, pre-writing and handwriting skills, as well as in their primary activities of daily living.

With over 9 years of experience, Neeha has worked with children from birth to 16 years old, with varying diagnoses including but not limited to autism spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, developmental delays, developmental coordination disorder, cerebral palsy, disruptive behavior disorder, and down syndrome. Neeha completed the Intensive Program for Sensory Integration through Western Psychological Services and the University of Southern California at Pediatric Therapy Network in Torrance, CA, where world-renowned instructors and master clinicians trained her over 4 months in sensory integration theory and treatment following the work of A. Jean Ayers. She is Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT) certified, following advanced training and coursework through Western Psychological Services. Identified as the most comprehensive assessment for sensory integration, the SIPT is often referred to as the gold standard for standardized evaluation of sensory processing and praxis concerns and assists in identifying specific sensory system difficulties that are associated with learning, behavior, emotions, and everyday functioning. Neeha also was a LEND (Leadership and Excellence in Developmental Disabilities) Fellow at the USC University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) through which she created innovative programs, developed leadership skills, and created multidisciplinary groups for children in early childhood mental health settings. Neeha worked with the UCEDD as an occupational therapist in their early childhood mental health program and participated in interdisciplinary early childhood and infant assessment clinics. Neeha has worked as adjunct faculty in occupational therapy programs, including University of Southern California and currently is an Assistant Adjunct Professor at York College in their Occupational Therapy program. Neeha also has a special interest in the area of cultural sensitivity when working with children and their families, amongst which she completed her doctoral work and has delivered presentations on this topic at national conferences.

Neeha’s approach to therapy is holistic, drawing from evidenced-based practice techniques, sensory integration theory, neurodevelopmental treatment approach, family-centered care, and a play-based approach. Neeha offers individual Occupational Therapy assessment and direct services in Manhattan in either clinic, home, or schools. OT can address a wide range of needs including gross motor/coordination issues, sensory processing and modulation, fine motor development, handwriting, self-care skills, social skills, feeding as related to sensory difficulties, and other activities of daily living. Consultation to parents and classroom teachers is also available, as well as group-based intervention.
